New UFC Fighter a Knockout
Yoel Romero Takes It One At a Time
Yoel Romero (5-1) will return to the octagon on November 6th, 2013 for UFC Fight Night for the Troops 3 on Fox Sports 1 versus Ronny Markes (14-1). Romero is coming off an electrifying UFC debut back in April for UFC on Fox 7 where he won a coveted Knockout of the Night Bonus with a massive flying knee to the face of Clifford Starks 1:32 minutes in the first round.
“It has been tough getting here,” said Romero, who had two fights fall through for UFC 164 which ended up in his fight getting cancelled all together at the last minute. “I was really disappointed my fight got cancelled,” said Romero. “I was in peak performance and had trained really hard for that fight.”
Romero, who won a silver medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, has long been touted as a ‘fighter to watch.’ “I don’t think of the future,” said Romero. “I only think of the next fight and right now that is Ronny Markes.”
Either way, the self proclaimed “Soldier of God,” has had an overall impressive MMA career with all five of his wins by way of knockout. “We want to bring Yoel up slowly and give him time to gain experience in the cage,” said Tina Vidal-Smith, Romero’s manager. “But, I do believe Yoel will be the next UFC middleweight champion. He has more natural talent than any other fighter I’ve seen and the training and dedication to back it up.”
Romero indicates he has not changed much with respect to his training camp. “I train six days a week, three times a day,” said Romero. “Sunday is the only day I rest. That is my day for God.”
A highly religious man, Romero leaves his future in the hands of God. “God has given me the talent and the opportunity,” said Romero. “It is my job to train very hard and dedicate myself to continuously improving God’s gift. But at the end of the day, when I step in the cage and I’m thinking of how I will win, if God wills it, it will be.”
“I know Ronny has very good jiu jitsu and has decent MMA all around,” indicated Romero. “He’ll have to be able to take me down in order to use it though.” Whether or not Markes can take Romero down remains to be seen, but he seems confident that he will finish this fight early.
For an athlete who has won multiple world championships in wrestling including two bronze, two silver, and one gold, Romero has never used his wrestling ability in the cage. This leaves fans and fighters alike at the edge of their seats in anticipation of whether they will ever see the master at his craft. “Don’t worry,” said Romero. “I will use my wrestling if I have to. But, I like to finish fights and if I can do that without breaking a sweat then why not!”
Romero trains at the world-renowned American Top Team at the Coconut Creek and Kendall locations under Ricardo Liborio and is managed by ML Management.
Romero’s fight at UFC Fight Night for the Troops 3 will take place on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Fort Campbell, KY and will be aired live on Fox Sports 1. Follow Romero on Facebook @YoelRomeroPalacio or on Twitter @YoelRomeroMMA.
